Why is the UK becoming so poor? The economic doom loop.

Families are worse off under this government. It isn’t a glitch; it is the inevitable result of politicians protecting state assets over the private sector.

Why is the UK becoming so poor? The economic doom loop.

The UK started becoming poor after the 2008 financial crisis, when the government bailed out the banks, printed money, and imposed austerity. We got poorer internationally after Brexit devalued the pound, and then COVID-19 blew up the public finances with unsustainable debt.

Now, rising bond yields mean interest payments on that debt are soaring.

We are caught in a economic doom loop.

Asset owners grew richer from money printing. Everyone else got poorer. The working families who decide elections now face immediate financial hardship.

Downing Street hides behind headline GDP figures. That data means nothing to voters facing rising energy bills, frozen tax thresholds, and shrinking take-home pay.

This squeeze is driving voters to insurgent parties. People see that the mainstream consensus offers no alternative on who pays for an expanding state.

The government is trapped. It cannot cut spending without collapsing public services, it cannot cut taxes without spooking bond markets, and it cannot generate wealth because its own red tape strangles private enterprise.

No matter which party takes power, this doom loop will only worsen unless a government is willing to make massive cuts—and unless the civil service actually implements them instead of burying them in bureaucratic resistance.
